Marie-Laure Ilie: Biography

A native of Paris, Marie-Laure Ilie is a Sorbonne graduate and a former Fulbright Travel Grant recipient. After teaching as a Teaching Fellow at the University of Michigan, she started a new career there by earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts at the University of Michigan. She acquired further training in several painting studios in Paris and a variety of workshops in the United States.

While her large abstract fabric paintings were being shown extensively in the United States and in Europe in the '80s and '90s, Ilie was carrying out avant-garde 3-D experi ments with organza and transparent veils, in search of reinterpretations of light and space.

After being a multi-media artist, Ilie now works mainly with fabric because of its symbolic links with human life and its truly diverse potentials. A visit in 1992 to Rome’s Archeological Museum gave her the insight that ancient robed statues can be the subjects of endless re-interpretations.

Since 1995, she exhibits her new genre of 3-D compositions that she calls mixed-media embodiments.
